Dancing is about expressing ourselves by moving our body to music and performance can make or break a good routine. We want to be entertaining and enjoy what we are doing. But how can we acheive this?
1. Smile!
The main reason why we dance is for enjoyment. That's why we love to watch dancers who are enjoying themselves more. The best way to fo this is simply smile! Smiling in itself releases chemical endorphins into your body that can actually make you feel happier. It doesn't matter whether you are dancing at a beginner level or at a top competitve level, this simple trick will change the look of your dancing.
2. Increase range of motion
By making your movements bigger it will give you the impression of looking much bigger and more confident. For example, if you are dancing a New York in Latin-American, make sure to stretch your arms and make yourself look big. In the Ballroom, make sure you use your head and body weight to shape and ladies make sure to keep your space at the top.
3. Be Composed
If you walk onto the floor with a heavy mind worrying about the next dance you will come across stiff and tense. Once you learn to calm your mind and relax your body, we can allow natural movement and technique to take over. Study body flight in the Ballroom and hip and leg action in Latin to create stronger and free movements.
4. Know your steps
Make sure that you know your routines inside out. It is likely that you will be dancing on a busy social floor or a busy competitive floor that will make it nearly impossible to stick to your routine. Make sure you know what you are dancing so you can think about where you are going.
5. Practice, Practice, Practice!
Practice is key to success. You should work on developing a connection with your partner so that you perform to each other as well as to the audience. Make sure you practice the points above. Make sure you go to group practice sessions (like the competitive practice we run on a Tuesday or our Friday Social Dance) and gain the experience.
Good luck!
